Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) Prayer Shawl Ministry at Our Lady of Grace Church in Beverly Hills began in the spring of 2010 under the leadership of Jean Clarke and Pattie Ryan.  The ministry began with a small group of knitters and crocheters who have remained constant and have been blessed with new members.
The ministry members started off slowly that spring and summer just knitting/crocheting shawls.  By September of 2010, twenty shawls had been accumulated and it was time to make decisions.  A blessing card to be included with the shawls was written along with washing and drying instructions, the establishment of a delivery committee and the decision to distribute the blessed shawls to members of Our Lady of Grace parishioners who were in treatment of a life-threatening and/or acute illness.  The ministry relies on parishioners and members of the council for notification of potential recipients of a prayer shawl.  Confidentiality is adhered to.
The Shawl Ministry made its introduction into the parish at the CCW Corporate Communion Mass, October, 2010.  Pastor, Msgr. Austin Mullin blessed the shawls following the Liturgy.  Since then, over twenty shawls have been delivered.  At each Prayer Shawl meeting the members pray for the families and all who have received the shawls.  The completed shawls are now blessed by the Prayer Shawl Ministry with their own prayers or ones from the many books on Prayer Shawls.
PRAYER SQUARES have also been incorporated into the ministry.  A small simple square is knitted with the attachment of a small cross.  A prayer was written by the group to enclose with the square and placed inside an envelope.  During Lent 2010, the Eucharist Ministers delivered them to the homebound parishioners and those residing in local nursing homes. They are now available for the clergy to give when making visits.
The ministry meets on the first Monday of the month following CCW meetings. Parishioners who knit or crochet are welcome to join.  We use Lion Brand Homespun and Simply Soft Caron yarns and both are available at Wal-Mart, Michael’s, and Joann’s.  Each lady supplies her own needles/hooks, yarn, time and talent along with many prayers. Funds are available to persons unable to provide the needed items.  All members have mentioned how rewarding this ministry has been to them; especially those who have delivered shawls to those in need.
For anyone who would like to be a part of this rewarding ministry, but cannot knit or crochet, monetary donations are accepted.  These donations will help this Ministry with the cost of cardstock and the printing of the prayer cards, the small crosses for the prayer squares and if necessary, yarn for shawls.  Prayers are needed for the continued success of this ministry, for all prayer shawl recipients and their families and for those who have received the prayer square.  Thanks to all who are able to help in any way.
